The last issue (Summer 2022) contained the first installment of a series of articles describing the design of an automated 35 mm slide scanner (Figure 12). To briefly recap, the scanner was designed to automatically digitize up to 80 slides without user intervention. One loads slides into a vertical hopper (Figure 13a), which contains a stepper motor-controlled elevator. This elevator pushes the slide stack toward the top of the hopper (b) where individual slides are captured by a shuttle mechanism (c), which then moves each slide over a small light box where an image is taken by a SLR digital camera (d). Once the image is acquired, the shuttle continues to move the slide until it is deposited in a retrieval chute (e).
