The nature of this invention titled 'Head gasket durability analysis using stacked gasket finite element model' is an analytical method developed to effectively calculate the Multi-Layer Steel (MLS) head gasket normal and shear motion between cylinder head and block as well as between different gasket layers during engine operating condition. The calculated gasket sealing pressure and shear motion is a good metric to detect the potential gasket failure location, and the displacement field can be used in the subsequent gasket local model to do the stress and fatigue calculation for each gasket layer. This stacked gasket finite element model used in the system level analysis does not require detail modeling of the gasket geometry for each layer but uses load-deflection curves to represent its stiffness. The gasket normal and shear motion predicted from this stacked gasket model are comparable to those predicted from the detail gasket geometry model with much less CPU time.
