State-of-the-art hydrogen production (grey hydrogen): Today, H2 production is mainly based on hydrocarbon feeds, e.g. by steam reforming of natural gas (steam methane reforming, SMR), whereby a H2, CO and C02 containing process gas is received. Said process gas is treated by water-gas shift (WSG) and subsequent pressure swing adsorption (PSA) to produce hydrogen and a PSA off-gas, containing H2 and CO2. As these conventional processes have a substantial CO2 footprint the produced hydrogen is called "grey hydrogen".
