I thoroughly enjoyed the article on the Lightning in the September edition, hut having flown that marvellous aircraft on my first tour I am sure that I am not the only pedant to offer comment. Ask any Lightning pilot about the radar controls and watch their left hand as it goes to work on at least a dozen actions on the radar hand controller. The article states that 'some radar controls were situated on the throttle and joystick (sic)' but it was the left hand that did 99 of working the AI23, not the throttles or control column. There is mention of Wg Cdr' Taffy' Holden's one and only solo; it might be worth adding that his take off was with the flaps up. As he was uncertain what, if any, trim change might result from lowering the flaps, he decided to leave them up and the tail scrape on landing was the (very minor) result Finally, and to give RAF Germany credit, the photo of the four aircraft in stepped echelon are, from the front, an F2 of 19 Squadron, an F3 of 56 Squadron, another F3 of 111 Squadron and another F2, from 92 Squadron Thank you for all the hard work you and the contributors put in; it's a great magazine.
