The Central Honshu Massif is the connected mountains ≤ 3,000 m high in the junctional area of the East and West Japan island-arc chains. The structural analysis of the area reveals that 1) asymmetric arching since 7 Ma has formed the island-arc chains, 2) the chains cross nearly perpendicular with each other in the junctional area, and 3) the inclined upwelling of the two mantle plumes crossing under the junctional area has caused the overlap of asymmetric arching to form the Central Honshu Massif.
