Decarbonisation and digitalisation are among the container shipping industry's main focuses, and here are a selection of players who are forging ahead in these areas, who should be considered leaders. Soren Skou, Maersk Group chief executive, is one of the leaders of the pack. With Mr Skou at the helm, Maersk is pioneering the use of methanol within the container ship industry. In October 2022, Maersk ordered six 17,000-TEU ultra-large container ships (ULCSs) from Hyundai Heavy Industries, for delivery in 2025. These vessels will run on green methanol, saving about 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, according to Maersk estimates. This most recent order raised Maersk's methanol dual-fuel fleet under construction to 19.
