Such were the rousing words of Dr Hayaatun Sillem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, who recently led a panel of pioneering female leaders and experts in the lead-up to International Women in Engineering Day (INWED). Hosted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the discussion focused on challenges surrounding female representation in the engineering industry, how we can encourage more women to pursue careers in this field, and the importance of striving for greater equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). However, it's all very well and good to increase the number of female recruits, but diversity - true diversity - is so much more than merely a box-ticking exercise, a statistical pursuit. One aspect of this conversation that often gets overlooked is that we don't only need to boost the number of women entering engineering, but the number of women staying in engineering.
