Wow! 'It's OK to be gay in Britain's railway industry in 2022; Scotland's Railway MD Alex Hynes tells us in your brilliant Pride feature (p53, last month),signalling from the very top just how much has changed in a workplace that was often very uncomfortable for a gay man during most of my 50 years as a transport journalist. The achievements of Archway show how gay people can bring so much more to their jobs when they don't feel the need to hide their sexuality. One person 'coming out' encourages others and helps create an environment where all minorities can feel comfortable in their employment. The Rail to Refuge scheme and the Women in Rail Awards (also featured in your July issue) further demonstrate our industry's openness to inclusion and willingness to engage with social problems. Pride liveries signal'you are welcome here'to both staff and passengers, a great way of spreading goodwill and advertising inclusive HR practice. Let's hope they are with us for the long-term, so that every gay jobseeker seeing Pride liveries will be encouraged, and every gay passenger more comfortable about travelling.
