This past May I attended the annual Great Lakes Genomics Conference normally hosted in Toronto, Canada, but this year it was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Formerly known as the Great Lakes Chromosome Conference, the conference was rebranded in 2017 to recognize the increasing overlap of molecular and cytogenetic techniques in laboratory diagnostics. One of the highlights of the conference exceptionally demonstrates how molecular genetics and cytogenetics are becoming increasingly intertwined. Coined Next-Generation Cytogenomics, Optical Genome Mapping (OGM) has the clinical genetics community extremely excited.
