Whenever the amateur lathe operator has to cut a screw thread on a small manual lathe, there is usually an inward groan at the thought of mounting the necessary gear wheels. It is a time-consuming and messy job. In some cases a gear train of six wheels has to be assembled. While this time-honored method is perfectly satisfactory, it limits the range of screw threads that can be cut. It is not always possible to set up the gear train to give the necessary ratios. Cutting tapers is usually awkward, too, and is limited by the traverse of the compound slide. This project sets out to overcome both these difficulties with a CNC system, or what is often called an electronic lead screw.
