Asian Pacific Society of Respirology - Tenth Congress and First Joint Congress with The American College of Chest Physicians

The inaugural Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR)/American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) joint congress attracted over 2400 registrants, many of whom came from mainland China; there were also delegations from Europe, North America, South Asia, North Asia and Australasia. The scientific program featured diseases such as branchiectasis, which are uncommon in Western countries and, therefore, not the subject of intense research. In contrast, bronchiectasis is a common disease in Asia where it has been subjected to extensive research, which provides guidance for Western countries in understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of the disease. Infectious diseases, which are endemic in the region, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), avian influenza and tuberculosis, were also featured in the program.
