Bladder cancer (BC) occurs when there is growth of abnormal tissue, known as a tumour, in the bladder lining. In some cases, the tumour spreads into the bladder muscle and can metastasise to distant parts of the body. There are around 10,000 new cases of BC each year in the UK (see Figure 1 (#figure-l)). which makes it the 11th most common cancer, accounting for 3 of all new cancer cases1-3.
