This article examines the origins of the Brazilian health sector reforms that have led to universal and free access to integrated healthcare, provided in a decentralised manner For many experts in the field of health sector reform, the Unified HealthSystem (Sistema Unico de Saude, SUS) that emerged in the late-1980s and 1990s is a success story. Understanding the origins of this success is the goal of this article.
