Causes of fires at composting facilities are examined. Measures for handling and extinguishing fires are described. The importance of diligent monitoring of bulk organic materials at the site, based on an understanding of how fires start and behave,as a key preventive strategy is emphasised. Handling surface fires and detecting and handling internal fires from spontaneous combustion are discussed. Suggestions are given for the contents of a fire preparation emergency response box.
