Some pumps (and compressors) are designed to handle large flows, which may occur only occasionally. This means that the pump is larger and less energy efficient than needed for the smaller flows that may be present for most of the pump's operation time. The current proposal relates to a two-stage series pump in which the second stage can be selectively used to provide additional capacity when required. In particular, by using back-to-back technology with a hydraulic clutch using pumped media, the full capacity can be selectively engaged when needed.
