The waste management practices of Renovasjonsselskapet for Kristiansandregionen (RKR), the municipal solid waste authority in southern Norway, are overviewed. The city of Kristiansand has one of the highest recycling rates in Norway and was the first to develop a full-scale biowaste composting facility. This facility is part of an overall waste management complex that includes a new landfill, leachate treatment lagoons and a drop-off recycling centre. The biowaste separation programme is part of a'three-stream sort' that includes containers for biowaste, recyclables and the remaining fraction. Biosolids and biowaste are composted separately in agitated bins, with wood shavings and recycled compost used as amendments. Ventilation and odour controlin the composting hall is described. Marketing and uses of the final product are discussed.
