BOOM OF THE BUSH TELEGRAPH: While metropolitan newspapers shed staff and revenue, small country papers are gaining readers by publishing all the news that's fit to print in their communities

Six tiny offices are abuzz with staff hastily finishing articles, typing last-minute ads on computers and Photoshopping images. As each task is completed the staffer then dashes to the compositor's room, where one of two graphic designers slot the copy into an allotted space before printing a proof sheet. The piece of paper is rushed to editor Robin Letts for his approval, then returned to the designer, who makes the adjustments before taking the final layout to the print room. There it's fed into an offset machine that rhythmically whooshes like a steam train at full throttle.
