Our ability to continue to attract customers, deliver value for money and lead on transport sustainability requires the introduction of novel solutions grounded in successful research. And for that research to make a difference, it needs to be of the best quality, conducted with a sense of urgency, and for its outputs to reach and persuade decision-makers and buyers to take action and get them into use. These, together with the opportunities that stronger co-operation and joint working across countries and continents brings, were common and strong threads throughout the 13th World Congress on Railway Research (WCRR) which took place from 6-10 June in Birmingham, hosted by RSSB and the University of Birmingham. WCRR is the largest international Congress devoted to the topic of railway research and the 2022 Congress saw more than 750 delegates in attendance, with more than 300 papers, three plenary sessions, nine masterclasses and three professional growth sessions, all of which was glued together by a bustling networking exhibition and evening social events. Delegates have remarked that they were particularly impressed with the quality of papers across the 40 research presentation sessions, covering a diverse range of topics from rolling stock design and freight logistics to passenger experience and sustainable infrastructure.
