The right tree in the right place for the right reason

When I started as a forester with the Queensland Department of Forestry in 1958, there was very little community interest in trees or even in the management of the native forest. But that was to change over the next 20 years. Ten years later, I joinedthe Commonwealth Forestry and Timber Bureau (F&TB) with the task of finding suitable tree species for plantations to supply the timber requirements of northern Australia. The NT Environment Council had recently formed and was coming to grips with challenges to conservation and how to manage the recently declared Kakadu National Park, which included the Ranger uranium mine. Several of us with scientific training considered that we could contribute to this community organisation and joined.
