An effective disease surveillance system is essential to maintain high-end markets for our agricultural products. Our trading partners demand evidence that we would find an exotic disease (should one occur) very shortly after it entered Australia. This gives our trading partners confidence that our claims of disease freedom are valid. The UK recently demonstrated the effectiveness of their disease surveillance system by identifying the 2007 foot-and-mouth outbreak before it had spread beyond two farms.
