THE DAY may soon arrive when all the plastic wrap and pipe used on farms can be turned into new agricultural products. Full loop recycling is already happening with some plastics such as battery cases and plant pots. According to SimsPlastics' Alfie Tonkich it may one day happen with agricultural films. In the meantime SimsPlastics is revolutionising farm plastic recycling at its new plant in Maribyrnong, Victoria. Taking around 80% of the nation's DrumMUSTER farm chemical drums, the company is alsothe major recipient of recycled plastic film from horticulture such as tomato and banana crops wrap and from livestock producers with silage wrap and netting. The plant produces around 25 tonnes a day of reconstituted plastic as black pellitised beads, which is sold back to manufacturers of plastic products. The reprocessing of farm waste plastic provides a service for the environment, reducing pollution and the costs associated with landfill disposal. It also should mean that new products made from reconstituted plastic are less expensive.
