Meeting a nation's perceptions: the challenge for rangeland managers

FIVE or six years ago I was doing some work at Quilpie, Queensland. During a break in proceedings I moved to the back of the room, in the local bowling club, to make some calculations. I pulled out my mobile phone which duals as a calculator and organiser, and as I pulled it out of my pocket an old bloke said "not much good using that it won't work out here son". I smiled at him and moved away where he couldn't see and went on with the calculations. He was tolerant and understanding with this young fella who might have known something but didn't know much about this country.
