The evolution of EMS on farm

The lead-up to the Third National EMS (Environment Management Systems) in Agriculture Conference in November is a good time to reflect on developments in this area. When the first national conference was held in Ballina, NSW, in 1999, EMS in agriculture was still in its early stages. While there was obvious interest in the subject, most of the 160 delegates had limited knowledge or practical experience of EMS. There was only one position across all levels of government. Its role was to provide EMS aid to a cross-section of Australian agriculture. Few programs provided help with EMS development and implementation. No training had been developed for farmers.
