Extended quality feed from perennial forage species

At a recent western Victorian workshop Department of Primary Industries agronomist, Kevin Reed, reviewed three perennial forage species that are important sources of summer pasture growth and contributors to reducing water 'leakage' into ground water. Lucerne is a productive high quality forage and an excellent species for using water and so mitigating the serious threat of dryland salinity. Occasionally, we have seen old (20 plus years) lucerne stands on local wind-blown dunes associated with old lakes, and on volcanic ash soils in western Victoria. However, on most of the prime lucerne land in the northern hemisphere lucerne is resown after five to eight years.
