Engine manufacturers are constantly being pressured by tougher regulations and increased consumer expectations. These expectations call for engines that are more fuel-efficient, yet perform at an even higher level in terms of noise and overall engine performance. In short, engine complexity is continuously on the rise. Current engines experiment with variable valve timing, EGR (internal or external), multiple injections, and turbocharger controls (variable geometry or wastegate), as well as advanced control strategies and sophisticated exhaust-aftertreatment systems.
