It was early in the year 1886, I was at the time busy on some survey work a few miles from the old military station at Jullungarh. This little town, till a few years back, so happy and prosperous, had suddenly "for reasons of state been vacated by themilitary. Civic prosperity in the Punjab often follows in the wake of the army and, as it frequently occurs, with the closing down of the officers mess and the departure of the regimental band, Jullungarh sank rapidly into that fatal lethargy from which few such towns revive.
