Huntingdonshire was not a county noted for railway activity and although the Great Northern main line ran through the western side of the country, indeed serving the county town, its trains ran through the shire in less than half an hour and none of the stations saw much in the way of the operating activity that one would find at either Peterborough or Hitchin, main line junctions to the north and south respectively. The GNR main line was crossed near Huntingdon by a straggling branch of the Midland Railway - almost certainly the quietest cross-country line in the country -and few enthusiasts gave any thought to the fact that a few minutes east of Huntingdon lay the quiet rural market town of St Ives, but it could provide the most discerning of observers with enough railway variety to keep him happy for hours on end.
