Brisbane marine pilots: Cooperative pilotage in the marine hub of queensland

Until 1989, Brisbane's pilots were essentially state public servants, as were most of Australia's pilots at the time. With Queensland's pilotage privatised, the pilots formed Brisbane Marine Pilots (BMP), a proprietary company in which they all becameshareholders and contracted management of the service with the state and with Maritime Safety Queensland. As Brisbane's marine traffic has grown, with current figures showing a rate of six per cent per year, so has BMP's investment in people and assets.
