Last issue's feature on the UK potential of small, modular nuclear reactors prompted a lively debate amongst readers. I'm 100% supportive of this, but really just get on with it guys, we need this yesterday. This is a new application but not really a new idea - how long have our nuclear subs been using similar technology? And China and Russia are way ahead of us on this. Regarding waste, the amounts are relatively small and the waste does eventually become safe, unlike plastic waste. Technology to deal with nuclear waste exists and should not be a limiter to SMR development. As to having one in my backyard, not an issue for me. Rather that than a Bus depot, waste incinerator, Radon emitting rocks, chemical works, or sewage farm.
