The government has stated that the UK should achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and as road transport currently contributes 25% of the UK's emissions, it is a significant contributor. From 2030, no new cars or vans may be fuelled wholly by petrol or diesel, and from 2035 hybrid vehicles wi not be allowed to be sold either, as a result of which electric vehicles (EVs) will become the dominant technology. This has significant implications for housebuilders, designers and architects, since the resulting increase in EV ownership will require homes to be provided with the necessary equipment for residents to charge their rides.
