Additive manufacturing can be carried in various manners using a variety of heat sources and materials. One example is additive manufacturing using an arc as heat source, and a metal wire as the source material from which the component is to be built. This broad family of processes is often referred to as "direct energy deposition", or DED. In particular, one method of DED is wire arc additive manufacturing, or WAAM. WAAM-manufactured components are so-called near-net shape parts, which require a final round of conventional subtractive machining (removal of material) to achieve the required dimensions.
