As this issue is going to press, California and many other states are on stay-at-home orders, beaches and parks have been closed, and beaches have become one of the battlegrounds in efforts to prevent large-group gatherings. I hope in future issues we have some papers about this time and the temporary or longer-term changes that have been observed at our beaches. For now, it is a bit surreal to read papers about beaches and monitoring options when these areas seem so out of reach. This is the perfect issue, though, for the photo contest winners. Until we can go out, take our own pictures, and see coastal scenes, the photos are a good substitute. An interesting feature of the winning photos is that they have some human artifacts -- like the cover picture with the lighthouse, or the abandoned pier at Cedar Key -- but otherwise are views of the coast without people. It will be interesting to see if next year's winning entries have people enjoying the coast.
