Dr. Raja Ramanna was a rare combination of a scientist, technologist, administrator, philosopher, musician and musicologist, who played a dominant role for over 5 decades in the advancement of science and technology in the post-independence era of India. He was a colossus in terms of achievements, but very simple and modest in his daily life. He had the rare ability of bringing out the best from anyone who had the good fortune of coming into contact with him. Early Life: Raja Ramanna was born on 28th January 1925 in Tumkur a small town 80 Kms from Bangalore His father B.Ramanna was in the judicial service, Mysore State and mother Rukmaniamma, a voracious reader of English Literature and composed poems in Kannada Language. His early education was in the Bishop Cotton School in the cantonment area of Bangalore. He learnt Western music and Piano under a nun by name Mother Agnes and Mother Maurine. Based upon the above facts Mysore Maharaja Krisnaraja Wadiyar once listened Raja Ramanna's performance on Piano and appreciated him through an award.
