More than a decade after a controversial relocation from Seattle, a federal marine research center has firmly established itself in Oregon.The Newport-based NOAA Marine Operations Center - Pacific opened in 2011. It had been at Lake Union in Seattle for decades before that, and the move south was met with opposition, including from U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington.A 2010 press release from Cantwell's office advised against relocating "in the face of official warnings," and suggested that funding would be halted if the move proceeded.
