摘要

Even though hot dog volume was down in 2021, compared to 2020 and 2019, dollar sales were up because of higher meat prices. The sausage category increased in volume and dollar sales compared to 2019, but was slightly down from 2020, according to Eric Mittenthal, president of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) and vice president of sustainability for the North American Meat Institute (NAMI). "Consistent with other meat products, hot dogs and sausages tend to see lower volume sales when prices are up so continued price pressure into 2022 will likely impact volumes for the year," Mittenthal said. According to data from the Nielsen Co., more than 1.4 billion lbs of hot dogs were sold in retail stores in 2020 (latest data available). In addition to being sold at supermarkets, hot dogs also record high sales at airports, restaurants and ballparks. Los Angeles is the city recording the highest sales of hot dogs, according to the NHDSC. New York has the second-largest hot dog market followed by Dallas/Ft. Worth in third place. Rounding out the Top 10 are Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Houston Atlanta, Tampa and Phoenix. The sale of hot dogs also varies by season; the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day make up "hot dog season," with an estimated 38% of the total number of hot dogs being sold during this time. July is National Hot Dog Month - 10% of annual retail hot dog sales typically occur during July.
