William T. Larkins is well-known for his standard-setting books US Navy Aircraft 1921-1941 and its companion US Marine Corps Aircraft 1914-1959. The Marine Corps book was released in 1959, and the Navy volume followed in July 1961 (a combined volume autographed by Bill is available through the Aviation Book Club by calling 818-700-6868 and we have very few copies left). Thus, with his intense interest in Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, Bill was actively attending airshows and various tours set-up by the Aviation and Space Writers Association that was extremely active at the time. In this installment of our Larkins photographic series, were showcasing a dozen images shot in the late 1950s/early 1960s before the Tri-Service aircraft designation system was implemented in September 1962. We find the images of interest since they show a variety of colorful markings. These slides were restored by photographer and former F-14 pilot Jim Leslie of Morgan Hill, California.
