Ten years ago my wife Adele and I went on holiday to Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. During that trip I saw the famous Man Lung Penjing collection in Hong Kong, owned by Mr. Yee Sun Wu. In Singapore I visited the famous Chinese & Japanese Gardens where many pen-jing are displayed. At that time I was not able to make contact with any major bonsai growers in Bangkok or the rest of Thailand. I did stumble across some bonsai being sold at a Bangkok flea market and towards the end of our trip I visitedthe Southern Bonsai & Orchid Nursery, a very small operation in Phuket where the owner (whose name escapes me) grew his own bonsai. The trees were not highly styled and were grown using the clip and grow method. There were quite a number of trees in training and they were available for sale. The original grower passed away a couple of years ago and on our most recent trip we learned that the granddaughter of the now-deceased nurseryman looks after the nursery. The bonsai have lost shape and are no longer receiving penjing training but rather are sold as regular potted plants.
