In the Spring of 2003 I was one of the demonstrators at the First Euro-Bonsai Gala in Bad Staffelstein, Germany. For months earlier I pondered over which tree to use as I had many in my collection. It was too late in the season to work on Pines, Larches, etc. Spectators at demos like action and lots of it. Therefore it had to be something that would send lots of wood chips flying as well as be dynamic after the final presentation. I made my final decision to use this particular Spruce only after I was quite certain that it could survive the rigors of being styled in the short amount of time allotted in a demo. This is how an old lonely Spruce made its way to a new life! The Picea abies (Red Spruce) is quite an abundant tree in the alpine region andis extremely frost resistant but without a doubt does not like wet feet. The wide swing in temperature range in the Alps can attest to this as winter can be as cold as -25 C. to +35-C. in summer and dry.
