An editor’s editorial is supposed to take a position on matters of shared concern: garbage collection being good, regular garbage collection on Tuesdays is even better; organic food surpasses synthetic food in sheer intangible virtue; Doris and Bonald are monstrously tacky but ever-recrudescent twins. Of greater interest to most of us, however, is the question of ’s4-,‘ Mesembryology’s future. For a long time this was connected, at least in my mind, to the undeniable greying, if not the reversible decimation, of our membership. In the last decade I’ve noted the same colour shift at the opera and the symphony, and even at the cinema, youngest and most juvenile of the half-arts. This chromatic decline seems to worry oldsters a great deal, but actual live popularity is quite another matter.
