Seven, cases of amyloid goitre are added to a review of this condition. In one case an iodinated protein of smaller molecular weight than thyroglobulin was recovered from the goitrous gland in addition to thyroglobulin. Autoradiography, however, showed no evidence that amyloid is iodinated. The presence of amyloid in the goitrous gland is often associated with mature adipose tissue. In 15 cases of amyloidosis without goitre the thyroid was found to contain amyloid which appears initially in the walls of small vessels. Fat was not found in the thyroid in such cases. The amyloid deposits were examined in 10 cases of medullary carcinoma of thyroid. There is little evidence of vascular involvement and fat is not associated with the amyloid. From autoradiography the amyloid in this condition is again not iodinated. In experimental amyloidosis the thyroid is involved, and deposition of amyloid in the gland is associated with the production of a sulphated mucopolysaccharide as in amyloid deposition elsewhere.
