Antibacterial effect and aroma of rose bengal on textiles

The paper describes the study on application of rose bengal on woven cotton textiles for antibacterial property and aroma. With a view to understand the effect of various functional groups present in it, molecular characterisation was done using FTIR. Fabric treated with rose bengal has greater colour depth (K/S value) in comparison to original fabric and it increases with the concentration of rose bengal. Zone of inhibition in treated fabrics reveal that the antibacterial effect is more potent against gram positive bacteria. Cotton fabrics also generate fragrance after treatment. Aroma intensity ratings of 200 respondents have been documented and evaluated.
