Jerk's Natural of the 328th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, at Gambut Airfield in Libya. The Jerk in the name was a reference to the B-24's pilot - John (Jack) Jerstad. The very well-worn aircraft is of interest because it shows the RAF fi flashes and the fact that the white of the national insignia has been toned down with gray paint. A silhouette of a sub is a claimed victory over a German U-Boat.Jerk's Natural returned successfully (diverting to Sicily with battle damage) from the Ploesti raid of 1 August 1943, during which 60 aircraft out of 179 were lost. However, the B-24D was lost during October 1943 during a raid on Austria, attacking the Bf 109 factory at Wiener Neustadt. The entire crew was killed except for the navigator who bailed out and was taken prisoner.
