In the February issue, I was pleased to see the article regarding Capt. Thomas Mantell and his fatal flight to intercept what was called an "Unidentified Flying Object." However, author James Thompson is incorrect assuming Capt. Mantell was flying a Mustang different than 44-63869.I have researched this incident for some time and now have the complete accident report that clearly states Mantell was flying F-51D 44-63869 and the accompanying photos prove that fact. I am attaching some photos that show 869 as a Kentucky Air National Guard Mustang and a close-up of the wrecked fuselage that clearly shows the number 869.
