The first actual mining in the area west of the Darling River in NSW was by an Aboriginal tribe that had located a deposit of ochre, which was prized for body decoration and as a paint medium in rock art. The ochre was chewed with water and then sprayed over a hand held against a rock overhang. Many such hand outlines have survived for centuries.
