The offspring of irradiated male newts were studied with a view to finding chromosomal aberrations. Several male newts (Pleurodeles waltlii) were given from 250 to 500 r X-rays to the hind part of the body and immediately placed with an unirradiated female. The proportion of abnormal embryos obtained from these matings was very significant. It was decided to investigate the viable offspring of irradiated males and to determine the types of chromosomal aberrations that they carried. This paper describes the first results obtained on 80 viable metamorphosed animals. Six animals with chromosome aberrations were studied in detail. They had translocations and deletions.
