Tiny forests and small clumps of trees carefully crafted and potted in small containers create a wonderful illusion. I have always enjoyed large forests but the day I saw my first shohin forest many years ago in the collection of William Breiten of Cooperstown, NY, I fell in love with it. They are reasonably easy to construct but the real work comes in the many years of training needed to create the details that are pure magic. The first task is to construct a viable group planting.
