Regional Bonsai Care

It has been exactly five years since we did a Regional Care Soil article. We've never repeated a topic before, but the topic is of critical importance to the horticultural aspect of bonsai, and there are so many differing opinions on soil components that it if there was ever a topic which warranted repeating, this would be it. As always, our focus for the Regional Care series is not so much on general information about the topic, but rather on how differences in geographical climate effect our choices in bonsai care. With regard to soil, some components seem to work universally, whereas others are ideal in some areas but ill suited in others. A coarse sand might work in the Florida keys or even the rainy Pacific northwest, but in the arid southwest, one would need to water every five minutes to keep your trees alive. A humus peat mixture might be good for a tropical in the sunny south where rapid growth is constant, but might be a recipe for root rot in Vancouver.
