Measurements of x‐ray scattering from ferric chloride solution in the concentration range from 1.5Mto 5Mhave been made. The radial distributions calculated from these measurements indicate a large degree of local ordering of the ions, with formation of Fe+3—Cl—complexes. At the highest concentration the [FeCl6]—3ion appears to be the main species present. As the concentration is lowered the coordination of the Cl—s around Fe+3becomes less definite and other species appear; in particular, the presence of Fe2Cl6is indicated.
