The COVID-19 pandemic has offered water and health professionals a unique opportunity to understand how wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) can be most effectively used to monitor and mitigate emerging disease threats. Across thousands of sites globally, WBS has been used to make decisions about how to direct public health resources, such as testing, vaccines, medical therapies, and information. WEF's National Wastewater Surveillance System Program Director Anna Mehrotra will provide an overview of the types of settings in which WBS has been used during the current pandemic and the many factors that influence the variability and reliability of wastewater results. Specific examples of how public health professionals are using wastewater data will be provided, alongside ethical considerations for WBS and approaches used by various groups to address these ethical concerns.
