In practice, I opened the April 2, 2001 issue of Time magazine to its last page — the Essay page — and began reading "The News About Jessica", Roger Rosenblatt's epistle about his introduction to his first grandchild. The opening paragraph captured in words the bliss I have experienced six times — yes, my husband Bill and I are blessed with half a dozen grandchildren, and one more is on the way. I have lived Rosenblatt's first paragraph, and hold close to my heart the unmatched wealth that cradling a babe breathes into midlife.
